Septic Excavation as Part of the Full Job
Every new septic installation requires excavation. Major repairs – replacing a distribution box, accessing a failed section of field, repositioning a tank – require it too.
RPM Septic handles both the excavation and the septic work as a single project. You are not coordinating between two contractors or waiting on one company to finish before the other can start.
Ralph Merlo has been doing this work in Fairfield County since 1999. He is on every job, and he approaches excavation on residential properties with the same care he brings to the septic work itself: get in, do the job right, and restore the site before you leave.

Technical Precision
Deep-trench excavation and gravel-bed preparation for long term hydraulic stability.
Core Competencies
Septic Excavation Work We Perform
NEW INSTALLATION EXCAVATION
Full excavation for new system installation: tank pit, distribution box location, drain field trench work, and pipe runs. Excavation is completed to the dimensions and depths required by the approved permit. We handle backfill and site restoration as part of the installation project.
Common Applications
Wet Basements • Soggy Yards
REPAIR EXCAVATION
Accessing components for repair - distribution boxes, outlet structures, failed field sections, damaged pipes between the house and tank. On residential properties, we work carefully around existing landscaping, structures, and the portions of the system that are functioning. Site restoration is included.
Common Applications
Driveway Pooling • Gutter Runoff
TANK ACCESS
For tanks where the access cover is buried at depth, we excavate to expose it. This is sometimes required to complete a proper pump-out, inspection, or repair. If the tank location is unknown, we locate it before excavating.
Common Applications
Septic Protection • Yard Saturation
Understanding Water Dynamics
Why Excavation Quality Affects the Septic System
Excavation for a septic project is not just digging a hole. The depth, angle, and condition of the excavated area directly affects how the system is installed and how it performs over time.
Why Accurate Excavation Matters
For a new system, the excavation needs to account for the approved system design – tank placement, distribution box location, field layout, and the setback distances required by Connecticut health department permits. An excavation that is off in any of these dimensions means the installation does not match the permitted design.
Challenges of Residential Septic Excavation
For repairs, working on an existing residential property requires care. There are utility lines, landscaping, structures, and in many cases, the rest of a functioning septic system immediately adjacent to where you are working. Experience on residential lots matters.
The Advantage of One Team Handling the Project
Because RPM handles both the excavation and the septic work, there is no gap between what the excavator prepared and what the installer needed. The same person who designs the project digs it and builds it.

Posted on Google steve luttingerTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I had RPM service my septic system. First time I used them. They were great to work with - very communicative and flexible about scheduling service. They did a great job emptying the tank and replacing the filter. Really happy to have found them.Posted on Google Young KohTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We had an issue with our septic system overflowing, so I reached out to RPM Septic Systems. They actually called me back first and reminded me they had pumped the tank just six months ago, so it was unlikely to be full again so soon. They suggested they would come and check the filter first, which made a lot of sense. That’s exactly what they did—and once they replaced the damaged filter, the water level went right back down. Not only did that save me the cost of an unnecessary pumping, but it also gave me real peace of mind knowing I can trust them. Really appreciate the help—thank you!Posted on Google ImmaTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Very responsive and thorough.
