Emergency Septic Service for Connecticut Homeowners

When a septic system backs up or fails, you need someone who can respond fast and assess the situation accurately. RPM Septic has been handling emergency calls across Fairfield, Litchfield, and New Haven counties since 1999.

Ralph Merlo takes the call and handles the job. You are not dispatched to a random crew – you get the owner, with 25 years of diagnostic experience, who will tell you exactly what is happening and what needs to be done to resolve it.

Emergency service is available Monday through Saturday. Call (203) 942-2100.

Technical Precision

Deep-trench excavation and gravel-bed preparation for long term hydraulic stability.

Core Competencies

What Happens When We Arrive

DIAGNOSIS

Ralph assesses the system - tank level, outlet condition, field area, drainage around the property. The goal is to understand what caused the backup before doing anything else. Pumping a tank that has a blockage downstream does not solve the problem.

Common Applications

Wet Basements • Soggy Yards

EMERGENCY PUMP-OUT

If the tank is the issue, we pump it. This immediately relieves pressure on the system and allows you to resume limited water use while the underlying cause is addressed.

Common Applications

Driveway Pooling • Gutter Runoff

REPAIR OR NEXT STEPS

If a component failure caused the emergency - a broken baffle, a damaged outlet, a distribution box issue - we assess whether it can be addressed on the same visit or requires a scheduled repair. You leave the emergency call knowing exactly what happened, what was done, and what comes next.

Common Applications

Septic Protection • Yard Saturation

Understanding Water Dynamics

How to Know If Your Situation Is an Emergency

Not every septic issue requires an emergency call. But some situations should not wait. The risk of delaying – property damage, health hazards, system damage that makes the eventual repair more expensive – is real.

Sewage Backing Up Into the House

Sewage is backing up into the house. This is the clearest sign that the system has reached capacity or that there is a blockage between the house and the tank. Continued water use will make it worse. Stop using water, do not flush, and call.

Sewage Surfacing in the Yard

Sewage or effluent is surfacing in the yard. If you can see or smell sewage near the drain field or tank area, the system is not handling the load. This is a health hazard and typically a permit-reportable situation in Connecticut.

A Saturated Drain Field Causing Backups

The drain field is completely saturated and the house is showing backup signs. A field that cannot accept effluent backs the system up into the house. If it has been raining heavily and you are seeing drain issues inside, the two may be connected.

What to Do Before We Arrive

Stop using water immediately

Every gallon you put into the system adds to a problem that is already at capacity.

Do not flush anything

This includes anything labeled flushable. - Keep everyone away from the drain field area. Surfacing effluent is a health hazard.

If sewage is backing up into the house

Turn off the water supply at the main shutoff.

Note where you are seeing the problem

Which drains are affected, whether you can smell anything outside, how long it has been going on. This helps us assess the situation faster when we arrive.

If you are seeing any of these...

The right move is an assessment before the problem gets worse. Call us at (203) 942-2100.
