Your septic tank has one job: hold and separate waste so your drain field stays healthy. When the tank fills up, it stops doing that job. Regular pumping keeps the system running and prevents the kind of backups and field failures that cost thousands to fix.
RPM Septic handles residential and commercial septic pumping and cleaning across Fairfield, Litchfield, and New Haven counties. We pump the tank, inspect what we can see while we’re there, and tell you if anything needs attention. Most residential pump-outs are done in under two hours.
Ralph Merlo has been doing this work in Connecticut since 1999. When you call RPM, you get the owner – not a crew dispatched from a call center.
Deep-trench excavation and gravel-bed preparation for long term hydraulic stability.
We pump the liquid and soft solids from the tank using a vacuum truck. This is the standard maintenance service most households need every 3 to 5 years. We locate the tank, expose the access point, pump the contents, and inspect the visible components before we leave.
Wet Basements • Soggy Yards
Cleaning goes further than pumping. We remove the hardened sludge layer at the bottom of the tank - material that a standard pump-out does not fully extract. If your tank has gone more than 5 years without service, or if we find heavy buildup during a pump-out, cleaning is the right call. It restores full tank capacity and gives the system a clean start.
Driveway Pooling • Gutter Runoff
Every service visit includes a visual inspection of what we can access. We check the baffles, look at the outlet condition, and note anything that warrants attention. If we find something worth addressing, we tell you - along with what it will cost to fix it. No upsells, no pressure.
Septic Protection • Yard Saturation
Tank fill issues are rarely caused by one factor, but by everyday usage patterns that quietly overload the system
A standard residential septic tank handles everything that goes down your drains. Solids settle to the bottom and form a sludge layer. Lighter material floats to the top. The middle layer — the liquid effluent — flows out to the drain field. When the sludge layer builds up too far, that middle layer disappears. Solids start reaching the field, and field damage follows.
For a household of four, tanks typically need pumping every 3 to 5 years. But usage patterns matter. A household that does multiple loads of laundry daily, uses a garbage disposal, or has a larger-than-expected number of people living in the home can fill a tank significantly faster.
Some things accelerate the problem more than others. Flushing wipes — even the ones labeled flushable — is one of the most common causes of premature tank fullness. Harsh chemical drain cleaners kill the bacteria that break down solids in the tank, which also speeds up sludge accumulation.
If multiple drains are moving slowly (not just one sink or shower), it usually points to a system-wide issue rather than a localized clog.
Hearing gurgling when flushing or draining often means air is trapped due to improper flow, a common sign your tank is nearing capacity.
Persistent sewage smells inside the home or around the tank and drain field area indicate waste isn’t being properly contained or processed.
Wet spots or unusually green patches over the drain field suggest excess effluent is surfacing instead of being absorbed properly.
Sewage backing up into floor drains or the lowest fixtures in the house is a major red flag. When this happens — especially alongside other symptoms — it often means the tank is full or the system is under serious stress. Immediate service is critical to prevent further damage.
Our reputation is built on honest work, reliability and long-term customer relationships in Danbury and the surrounding areas.
Posted on steve luttingerTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I had RPM service my septic system. First time I used them. They were great to work with - very communicative and flexible about scheduling service. They did a great job emptying the tank and replacing the filter. Really happy to have found them.Posted on Young KohTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We had an issue with our septic system overflowing, so I reached out to RPM Septic Systems. They actually called me back first and reminded me they had pumped the tank just six months ago, so it was unlikely to be full again so soon. They suggested they would come and check the filter first, which made a lot of sense. That’s exactly what they did—and once they replaced the damaged filter, the water level went right back down. Not only did that save me the cost of an unnecessary pumping, but it also gave me real peace of mind knowing I can trust them. Really appreciate the help—thank you!Posted on ImmaTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Very responsive and thorough.
