Homeowner — Danbury, CT
Poor drainage is one of the most overlooked problems a homeowner can have – until it gets bad enough to cause real damage. Water that has nowhere to go pools on your lawn, seeps toward your foundation, and can saturate the soil around your septic drain field. When that happens, a drainage problem becomes a septic problem.
RPM Septic handles three types of residential drainage work across Fairfield, Litchfield, and New Haven counties: French drains, surface drainage, and septic drain field drainage. We assess the property, identify what is causing the issue, and install a solution built to last.
We have been doing this work in Connecticut since 1999. Ralph Merlo handles the diagnostic on every job personally. You get a straight answer on what is wrong and what it will cost before any work begins.
Deep-trench excavation and gravel-bed preparation for long term hydraulic stability.
A French drain is a perforated pipe set in gravel and buried below grade. It collects subsurface water before it reaches the surface and channels it away from the problem area. French drains are the right solution for yards with persistent wet areas, slopes that direct water toward the home, and properties where surface drainage alone is not enough. They work underground and, once installed, require minimal maintenance.
Wet Basements • Soggy Yards
Surface drainage addresses water that pools on top of the ground after rain. This can involve regrading low areas to change how water moves across the property, installing catch basins, or channeling runoff away from foundation walls and septic components. If your yard collects water visibly after rain and it takes days to clear, surface drainage work is likely the right starting point.
Driveway Pooling • Gutter Runoff
A septic drain field that stays wet is a drain field at risk. We address drainage issues that directly affect septic system performance - including groundwater intrusion and surface runoff that saturates the field area. Fixing the drainage around a struggling drain field is often the difference between a repair and a full replacement. We assess both systems together and give you a clear picture of what is happening.
Septic Protection • Yard Saturation
Most drainage issues come down to a few predictable causes – and understanding them helps you catch problems before they become expensive repairs.
Connecticut’s soil varies significantly across Fairfield County. In areas with dense clay, water does not absorb quickly. After a heavy rain, it has nowhere to go and sits. Over time, that standing water erodes lawn areas, puts pressure on foundation walls, and can compromise the soil structure around septic systems.
Poor grading around a home is another common culprit. If the ground slopes toward the house rather than away from it, every rainstorm drives water toward your foundation. This is a design issue that does not improve on its own.
Septic drain fields are particularly sensitive to drainage conditions. A field that is already saturated from groundwater or surface runoff cannot accept effluent from the tank. If your yard stays wet for days after rain near where your septic field is located, that is worth having assessed before the system fails.
Standing water after rain that takes more than 48 hours to clear
Soggy or spongy areas in your yard that stay wet most of the season
Basement moisture or seepage along foundation walls
Sewage odors near the drain field after heavy rain

Posted on steve luttingerTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I had RPM service my septic system. First time I used them. They were great to work with - very communicative and flexible about scheduling service. They did a great job emptying the tank and replacing the filter. Really happy to have found them.Posted on Young KohTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We had an issue with our septic system overflowing, so I reached out to RPM Septic Systems. They actually called me back first and reminded me they had pumped the tank just six months ago, so it was unlikely to be full again so soon. They suggested they would come and check the filter first, which made a lot of sense. That’s exactly what they did—and once they replaced the damaged filter, the water level went right back down. Not only did that save me the cost of an unnecessary pumping, but it also gave me real peace of mind knowing I can trust them. Really appreciate the help—thank you!Posted on ImmaTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Very responsive and thorough.
